Here today, Garand tomorrow

Do you think they'll consider the M1 Garand an assault rifle, it's not black or plastic? I've always wanted one and really should wait to get it but if they're gonna ban it...? What d'ya think?

I doub't they could class that as an assault rifle could they? Its just a semi auto carbine isn't it? I'd get one and bury it. Whats the penalty for losing a gun?

#1 - Banned weapons are worth more

#2 - Detachable mags in a Semi-auto are going to be 'banned' not whether it has a black stock ~ that's just silly.

I remember when M-1 Garands sold dirt cheap, oh how I wished I'd bought a dozen back then! I haven't seen a Garand under $700 lately. Honestly, I don't think I'd part with that many FRNs for one, but you can be guaranteed, they'll never decrease in price!

I prefer the M1 Garand over any other fighting rifle. Powerful, accurate, easy to reload, carry a crap load of ammo without the need for box magazines.

I'll be grabbing the M! well in advance of the AR15 or AK47.

They will never come down in price...buy it now.

A good Garand will now cost you a Grand.......I've seen some real junk for $700.

Right. Everything that I've seen in the used rack, would fit the "junk" category. I haven't seen a Garand that I would consider buying, I assume they never get out to the floor display. Any quality Garand brought in for sale or trade, probably goes in the back room, to be sold on-line at sky-high premiums.

Get one here for 500 FRNS

http://www.thecmp.org/m1garand.htm

I got mine several years ago for $300, a greek return. I subsequently bought 1000 rounds for it. Its my go to rifle...heavy, but accurate, and can make hits 300+ yards...beyond the range the AR-15 bullets will fragment so you could stand a chance...IF you can hit 300+ yards. Milk jugs at 100 yards are easy and they explode on impact...fun gun!

Love that rifle...
Enjoy!

Re: Here today, Garand tomorrow

I have heard that the ones coming out of the CMP program now in the $600 range are actually looking really damn nice.

I am hoping to in the next month get my requirements taken care of to take advantage of this program to get a Garand for $600. Since I am within 3 hours of the northern store at Camp Perry, Ohio I plan to drive there and you are allowed to pick out what you think is the nicest one out of the lot. Nothing like hand picking your own rifle.

Remember that if you shoot your Garand, do not stuff just any .30-06 ammo. Use M2 surplus or the commercial Hornady equivalent; otherwise, you risk damaging the op rod. The Garand's gas system needs propellants that burn within a rather tight range, and lots of .30-06 ammo does not fit the bill.

+1 on the CMP.

The Garand is specifically listed in the pending weapons ban bill, HR 1022, so I'd say there's a good chance of them being banned.

I'm holding out hope that Orest (head of the CMP) dumps all the CMP Garands for 100 bucks each in advance of a ban. Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

At the CMP site the various "models" are listed as HRA, SA and WRA. I am having trouble determining what these differing designations would entail physically about the rifles. Can anyone enlighten me?

Excellent advice. Competitive shooters who've used the Garand for decades know how to load for it, and too much pressure / high port pressure will bend / crack the op rod. This is NOT a rifle to try to push with hot loads. You can probably find info on the "net. Don't try to push heavy bullets to high velocities. Op rods are expensive and hard to find.
